Defining Teamwork

Deftac Cebu has over 53 medals in the three tournaments that it has participated in the past two years, the number of competitors stand at 35, roughly 1.5 medals per competitor. We've been asked numerous times how we are able to pull off such a feat in such short a timeframe. There is no secret to it, it boils down to three things; a good work ethic, a no excuses-policy, and the heart to not just compete but win. All that, however, is not possible without a good, solid team backing you up and guiding you each step of the way.

Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is an individual sport and its obvious why. But what is not is how the whole team gathers around an individual to make that person better, grow. Whether it be preparation for a tournament, grading, or a simple sparring match; everyone makes sure that everyone is working harder, moving faster, and thinking more. We have world-class athletes training in the gym, we have doctors, nurses, teachers, students, retirees, managers, and even lawyers and we adjust according to his or her physical limitations, but that does not stop the team from trying to push the envelope every time we step on the mats. Everyone works hard and they expect teammates to be exactly the same way.

Deftac-Cebu is exactly that! Every time someone starts falling behind, the rest of the team picks up the slack. Every time we start making excuses, we are reminded not to. And every time we start to doubt ourselves, everyone else encourages us to do better.
